ASM AND TEAM JACO TRIUMPH AT TITAN 23
Deerfield Beach, FL — MMA enthusiasts who follow this popular sport in Japan likely were not surprised to see former Sengoku Champion Jorge Santiago finish Justin Gutherie at just 1:34 into the first round with an inverted heel hook Friday night during Titan 23 live from the Marshall Army Airfield in Fort Riley, KS. “The Sandman” captured his 25th professional win and then announced he will move weight classes from middleweight (185 lb.) to the welterweight division (170 lb.). At Titan 23, Santiago joined Tom Niinimaki and Freddy Assuncao, two of his fellow Blackzilians and Team JACO members who also picked up decisive wins in the Titan cage this past weekend.
“This is the Jorge Santiago who fought in Japan, I am that warrior again and with everything in my life balanced I feel the best I’ve ever been,” said Santiago. “Moving to welterweight is the right decision for me, I think I will be my strongest and with the training I have now with my coaches and teammates at Team JACO, I will be unstoppable.”
Tom Niinimaki, a recent addition to the Blackzilians camp in South Florida, impressed the military members and fans in attendance with his first win on U.S. soil by rear naked choke in the second round. Niinimaki (now 17-5-1) was voiced ambitions to compete in the UFC’s featherweight division. Also picking up his sixth straight win was Brazilian submission specialist, Freddy Assuncao, who ended his bout against Andrew Carrillo in the second round by way of TKO.
