UFC welterweight Patrick Cote

UFC welterweight Patrick CoteAccording to multiple media reports, Patrick Cote will take on Stephen Thompson in a welterweight fight. The contest will be part of UFC 178, which takes place Sept. 27 in Las Vegas.

Cote has been in and out of the UFC since making his debut on late notice. He stepped into the main event against former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz at UFC 50 in 2004. Over the course of his career in the Octagon, Cote picked up victories over Scott Smith, Kendall Grove and Ricardo Almeida. The Canadian is currently riding a three-fight winning streak over Alessio Sakara, Bobby Voelker and Kyle Noke.

Thompson has rebounded nicely from his first career defeat. After winning his first six fights, the striker ran into Matt Brown and dropped a decision at UFC 145. Like Cote, he is also riding a three-fight winning streak, which is composed of wins over Nah-Shon Burrell, Chris Clements and Robert Whittaker.

In the main event of UFC 178, light heavyweight champion Jon Jones will defend his title against Alexander Gustafsson for a second time. Jones previously defeated the Swedish challenger at UFC 165 in a fight that many considered fight of the year.
