Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 106 card from Fortaleza, Brazil, saw four “Performance of the Night” awards handed out. No “Fight of the Night” award was given. The four fighters who earned $50,000 each in fight-night bonuses were Kelvin Gastelum, Edson Barboza, Paulo Borrachinha and Michael Prazeres.
Gastelum stopped former light heavyweight champ Vitor Belfort in the first-round of their middleweight main event. The veteran didn’t go down without a fight though and tagged Gastelum a few times before eating a big left hand that put him down. Gastelum finished Belfort off via TKO at the 3:52 mark of the opening frame and improves to 4-0 at 185-pounds.
After losing the first round to Beneil Dariush, top lightweight contender Barboza was able to rally in round 2 with a perfectly timed flying knee that put Dariush out cold. The win marks Barboza’s eleventh career win by knockout as he picks up his eighth fight-night bonus award inside the UFC octagon.
Borrachinha made a big impression in his UFC debut and improved his undefeated streak to nine with a 77-second TKO finish of fellow middleweight Garreth McLellan. A kick to the body by Borrachinha hurt McLellan early. Borrachinha followed up with a flurry of punches for the stoppage and his eighth career knockout in nine fights.
Prazeres put the lightweight division on notice with his first-round stoppage of veteran Josh Burkman. Prazeres struck fast and hurt Burkman early with punches. Burkman hung tough and survived the initial onslaught, but a takedown from Prazeres set up a north-south choke submission finish at 1:42 of the opening frame. It’s the “Tractor’s” ninth career win via submission.
