Jon Jones, Volkan Oezdemir, Brian Ortega and Renato Moicano each earned $50,000 in bonuses for their standout performances at Saturday’s UFC 214 event in Anaheim. Jones and Oezdemir earned “Performance of the Night” honors, while Ortega and Moicano were awarded “Fight of the Night”.
Jones reclaimed the UFC light heavyweight title in the main event with a third-round knockout of Daniel Cormier. Cormier gave a good showing and had won at least one of the first two rounds. The 38-year-old Olympic wrestler pressured Jones and landed some good shots inside, but a perfectly timed headkick from Jones in the third set up the KO finish at the 3:01 mark.
No. 5 ranked light heavyweight Oezdemir took out No. 3 ranked Jimi Manuwa with a first-round knockout. Manuwa tried tying Oezdemir against the cage, but the plan backfired as the Swiss knockout artist landed heavy, backing Manuwa up and ultimately dropping him with a big left for the finish at the 42-second mark.
Featherweights Ortega and Moicana fought a back-and-forth battle for two-and-a-half rounds. After setting it up with punches, Moicano scored a takedown but was caught in a guillotine choke from Ortega. A few seconds later and Moicano was forced to tapout at the 2:59 mark of round three. Ortega keeps his unbeaten record in tact and improves to 12-0.
