Two new heavyweights will make their UFC debut at UFC Fight Night, June 28, in San Antonio, Texas, when MFC veteran Anthony “Freight Train” Hamilton takes on Bellator veteran Oleksiy Oliynyk. The event is headlined with a featherweight match-up between Cub Swanson and Jeremy Stephens and will be held at the AT&T Center.
Hamilton (12-2) is riding a six-fight win streak — five which have been stoppages inside two rounds. His last fight was in January when he won a unanimous decision over TUF 10 and one-fight UFC veteran Darrill Schoonover at MFC 39. Just prior to that the 33-year-old Jackson’s MMA product scored a second round head kick knockout over Smealinho Rama at MFC 38.
Oliynyk (48-9-1) is a 36-year-old Russian Sambo Master and 4th degree Jiu-Jitsu black belt. In 2010, he made it to the semifinals of Bellator’s heavyweight tournament but was taken out by UFC vet Neil Grove. Oliynk is currently on a nine-fight tear — all stoppages. That nine-fight streak includes wins over Tony Lopez, Jeff Monson, Dion Staring, and most recently, Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic. Here’s another factoid about the Russian; he lost a decision to Chael Sonnen at BodogFight back in 2006.
Keep in mind, Oliynyk has serious grappling credentials, and 39 wins via submission to back them up. And with Hamilton having won 50% of his fights via knockout, it’s going to come down to who can implement their game plan better on fight night. Oliynyk may be able to stand with Hamilton, but it’s doubtful Hamilton is going to want to play around on the ground much with Oliynyk.
With this latest addition, the June 28th UFC Fight Night card now includes:
