SHOOTO – 01/28/2018: Two World Champs Fighting in Non-Title Bout

Two current Shooto world champions are fighting in a non-title bout.

Lightweight champion Koshi Matsumoto is taking on Daisuke Hoshino and the bantamweight champion Shoko Sato will face Yo Saito.

According to the press release from Sustain, the promoter of Shooto, “While many champions are just concentrating on title defenses these champions are hungry for a fight” but the reality is, in today’s Shooto, its very difficult to create a challenger because there just isn’t enough fighters at that level.

For example, Matsumoto’s opponent, Hoshino, is a 36-year old veteran and the last time he fought for Shooto is back in 2012. And he is 3-3 in last six fights so seems like Sustain is just trying to make Matsumoto active until they have a legitimate challenger.

Similar case for Saito. The last time he fought for Shooto is back in 2013. Allthough he was 2-0 in 2017, these two wins took place in a smaller show against less than mediocre fighters, and Saito was winless in 2016.
