Seventh episode of DWTNCS features UFC vet Sanchez as well as Peterson, Santiago, and Berzin

Steven Peterson

Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series rolls on with the seventh out of eight episodes of the first season taking place Tuesday night.  DWTNCS 7 takes place August 22nd at the UFC Training Center in Las Vegas, NV with a webcast at UFC Fight Pass.

Arguably the most interesting bout on the card is Steven Peterson vs. Benito Lopez.  Peterson was the LFC champion when now-UFC matchmaker Mick Maynard ran that promotion before it merged with RFA to become LFA.  After the merger Peterson fought Leandro Higo for the LFA belt, a battle he lost by unanimous decision in January.  Peterson bounced back in July to defeat Ryan Hollis by rear-naked choke leaving his record 15-5 as a pro.  Benito Lopez is undefeated at 7-0 but to date his biggest fight was a win over Oscar Ramirez in April 2014, Lopez’ pro MMA debut.  Since then his wins have been more on the regional circuit with his last three being in KOTC where he defeated Rick James, Journey Newson, and Benny Vinson.

UFC vet David Sanchez, aka Joby Sanchez, returns to the series after defeating Enrique Vazquez during episode 1 but not earning a UFC contract.  9-3 Sanchez is mainly known for going 1-2 in the UFC wit a loss to Wilson Reis in 2014, a win over Tateki Matsuda in 2015, and a loss to Geane Herrera in 2015.  Since then Sanchez picked up wins over Martin Sandoval, Jesus Urbina, and Enrique Vazquez in regional promotions.  J.P. Buys is undefeated at 4-0 in regional promotions with his most recent being a TKO of Abdul Hassan in May.

Mike Santiago

Former Ring of Combat champion Mike Santiago is also on this card taking on Mark Cherico.  Santiago won the ROC title with a unanimous decision over Mervin Rodriguez and defended it against Lester Caslow in 2015 and 2016 respectively, defeated Luis Saldana in RFA, then took the HFC belt against Bill Kamery and defended it against Nick Wayne.  Cherico enters this bout 11-1 with four wins in a row most recently defeating Antonio Castillo Jr. last December.

Another vet vs. undefeated up-and-comer is CFFC champion Anton Berzin vs. Kennedy Nzechukwu.  5-1 Berzin win his last four fights including Jamelle Jones for the CFFC light heavyweight title in May, Nzechukwu defeated Thai Walwyn and Matthew Foster in regional promotion Xtreme Knockout.

The fifth fight sees RFA and LFA vet Nick Urso face Jordan Espinosa.  Urso holds a record of 9-3 with a win over Ken Porter in RFA, loss to Nick Mamalis in Rocky Mountain Rubicon, and most recently win over Brandon Royval in LFA.  10-5 Espinosa defeated Rafael De Freitas in LFC in 2014 but so far this year lost to Dinis Paiva Jr. in CES MMA and most recently defeated Bobby Escalante in Global Knockout.
