Sage Northcutt (8-2) and Claudio Puelles (7-2) will engage in a lightweight showdown at UFC 214 next month. The organization recently announced the matchup between the two youngest fighters on the current UFC roster.
UFC 214 will be held on July 29 from Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. Daniel Cormier will defend his light heavyweight belt in a rematch against former champ Jon Jones in the main event.
Northcutt is coming off a submission loss to Mickey Gall at welterweight back in December. For this fight, the 21-year-old striking specialist will be returning to lightweight where he is unbeaten inside the octagon. “Super” Sage made his UFC debut at 155-pounds in October 2015 with a 57-second knockout of Francis Trevino. He then returned just two months later to submit Cody Pfister. Northcutt’s most recent victory at lightweight was at UFC 200 last July when he won a unanimous decision over Enrique Martin. Four of Sage’s eight career wins have been by knockout and three by submission.
Puelles had two straight first-round stoppage victories as part of TUF Latin America 3 before dropping his octagon debut to Martin Bravo in the Finale at UFC Fight Night 98 last November. Prior to that “El Nino” had been headlining cards on the regional circuit in his home country of Peru and was coming off a first-round knockout of Alvaro Sugastti at 300 Sparta 6 in April 2015. Also only 21-years-old, Puelles has finished four of his seven career wins via submission and two by knockout.
