DEEP – 08/23/2009: Ryo Chonan Back in Japan

This was Ryo Chonan’s first fight in Japan for almost two years so it was obvious that he wanted to be aggressive, perhaps, trying to overwhelm Jutaro Nakao to prove that he got better and stronger fighting in the UFC.

Chonan pushed the pace in the first round with sharp kicks to the legs, and hard kicks to the body. However, every time Chonan attacked, Nakao knew exactly what to do. A veteran, with 40 pro fights under his belt, who KO’d Tony DeSouza in UFC 33, knew how to neutralize Chonan’s offense by clinching in the corner till the referee stepped in to break them up.

In the second round, Chonan, kept his pace in a standing bout. Nakao did stun Chonan a few times with his signature left straight but didn’t follow through with more offense. Finally at the end of second the round Chonan took Nakao to the ground and dropped a couple fists from Nakao’s guard but that was it.

In the third round, the pace significantly slowed down. Both fighters clinched at the corner more. The referee finally stepped in to break them up with one minute left in the round but both fighters didn’t do anything effective the rest of the fight. In the judges score card Chonan did win the fight but this was not what Chonan intended. After the fight, back stage, Chonan told the reporters, “It was not a fight where I can tell the other promoters to “Sign me up” with confidence, so I still gotta long way to go.”
