From New Jersey Martial Arts Hall of Fame:
(New Jersey) – The New Jersey Martial Arts Hall of Fame is extremely proud of its third class of inductees to the New Jersey Martial Arts Hall of Fame. This class will be honored at the third dinner gala to be held at the beautiful La Quinta Inns & Suites on December 5, 2014.
On December 5th, Dr. Mark Belafsky will be inducted as the Pioneer Physician.
Born and raised in Woodbridge, a Jersey Boy, through and through! Left in 1956 to attend the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, then on to Medical School in Chicago. Returned to Philadelphia to complete a residency in Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University. Entered private practice in Cherry Hill, New Jersey in 1971. Was Chairman of Otorhinolaryngology at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Centers and Associate Professor at Jefferson. Served seven years in the US Army, including a year as a General Surgeon in the Republic of Viet Nam. In 1985, was one of the ﬁrst Physicians appointed to the newly formed New Jersey State Athletic Control Board. Shortly thereafter, was appointed by Governor Thomas Kean to be the Board’s Medical Chairman. Kept that position until retirement in 2008. Responsible for the recruitment and training of New Jersey’s ringside physicians. Instrumental in developing the Universal Medical Rules and Regulations for Boxing, ﬁrst sanctioned in New Jersey, and then internationally. Instrumental in developing the Medical Rules and Regulations for Mixed Martial Arts, ﬁrst sanctioned in New Jersey, and then internationally. These Rules and Regulations were used in the ﬁrst MMA card ever, in Atlantic City. Member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, American Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery, American Head and Neck Society, and the American College of Surgeons. Member of the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame. Board Certiﬁed in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Married to Betty Forman Belafsky, Esq. for ﬁfty-two years. Two children, both physicians, and seven grandchildren.
