Nelson meets Volkov at UFC on FOX 24

Heavyweight brawler Roy Nelson (22-13) will battle ex-Bellator champion Alexander Volkov (27-6) at UFC on FOX 24 next month. UFC officials announced the bout on Tuesday.

UFC on FOX 24 will take place April 15 from Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo. Demetrious Johnson will defend his flyweight title against Wilson Reis in the main event.

Nelson is known as one of the most durable heavyweights of all time and is always dangerous with power in his fists. The 40-year-old TUF 10 winner boasts 15 knockout victories, including a second-round stoppage of Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva at UFC Fight Night 95 last September. Prior to that “Big Country” dropped a split decision to Derrick Lewis in July of last year. Nelson is now 4-6 in his last 10 outings.

Volkov won his octagon debut with a split decision win over Timothy Johnson at UFC Fight Night 99 in November. Before that, the 28-year-old Russian won the M-1 Global Heavyweight Championship by submitting Denis Smoldarev in February of last year, then successfully defended the belt with a first-round KO of Attila Vegh in June. Volkov won the vacant Bellator Heavyweight Championship in 2012. Eighteen of his 27 wins have been by knockout.
