Multiple media sources have reported that former UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson will take on Rafael dos Anjos in his next fight. The bout will be the main event of UFC Fight Night 49, which takes place Aug. 23 at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Okla.
Henderson defeated Frankie Edgar for the title in 2012. He then defended the belt with victories over Edgar, Nate Diaz and Gilbert Melendez. At UFC 164, Anthony Pettis defeated him and took the belt. Since dropping the title, Henderson has picked up back-to-back victories: a controversial decision over former Strikeforce champion Josh Thomson and a submission over Rustam Khabilov earlier this month.
Before joining the UFC, “Smooth” held the WEC lightweight title. However, he also dropped that belt to Pettis on the last WEC show in 2010.
Dos Anjos thrust himself into title contention with a five-fight winning streak that culminated with an upset victory over Donald Cerrone. However, his run of success came to a halt when he dropped a decision to upstart Khabib Nurmagomedov. Since suffering his first defeat since 2011, Dos Anjos rebounded with a second-round stoppage over Jason High.
This bout will serve as the main event of the card. The list of other announced bouts includes a welterweight contest between Thiago Alves and Jordan Mein as well as a flyweight contest between Tim Elliott and former Elite XC champion Wilson Reis.
