Women’s strawweight contenders Claudia Gadelha (14-2) and Karolina Kowalkiewicz (10-1) are slated to face one another at UFC 212 in June. The promotion announced the pairing this week.
UFC 212 will be held on June 3 from Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A featherweight championship unification bout between current titleholder Jose Aldo and interim champ Max Holloway will headline the card.
Gadelha is currently ranked No. 1 in the women’s 115-pound division and is coming off a unanimous decision win over Cortney Casey at UFC Fight Night 100 in November. Before that the 28-year-old BJJ black belt challenged Joanna Jedrzejczyk for her strawweight title last July but came up short on the judges’ scorecards. Gadelha also holds UFC wins over Jessica Aguilar and Tina Lahdemaki. Six of her 14 wins have come by way of submission.
Ranked No. 2 in the division, Kowalkiewicz suffered the first lost of her career when she challenged Jedrzejczyk for the title at UFC 205 this past November. The 31-year-old “Polish Princess” was riding a 10-fight winning streak prior to that with decision wins over Randa Markos, Heather Jo Clark and Rose Namajunas inside the octagon. Kowalkiewicz is a former KSW flyweight champion and holds a win over Japanese submission ace Mizuki Inoue under the Invicta FC banner.
