Ever since Yoshiro Akiyama got caught putting Oren's lotion all over his body before the fight against Kazushi Sakuraba, the Japanese MMA has been allergic to anything that can be applied to fighter's body.
And that is including Vaseline.
In the Japanese MMA competition, fighters are never allowed to apply Vaseline to their face. In fact, on entire body, nothing can be applied. And this rules will be in effect when a fighter gets a cut as well. Which means, a cut man must find a way to stop bleeding without using Vaseline.
However, that is going to change in DEEP.
On thursday, DEEP announced changes of rules in regards to use of Vaseline. All details will be notified to fighters later, therefore, at this point, 12-year old MMA promotion stated that they will try to get closer to the "UFC rules" – in Japan this means North American unified rules – and as a first step, Vaseline will be allowed in only DEEP CAGE shows for now.
Not all DEEP shows only the cage shows.
There were no explanation in regards to why this change of rules applies to only cage shows. However one thing is apparent and that is, DEEP is now shifting to become a gateway to UFC instead of sort of being the minor league of DREAM.
