In DEEP 72, DEEP bantamweight champion Takafumi Otsuka is defending his belt against Toshiaki Kitada.
These two met once back in November 2013, and on the record, Otsuka won via unanimous decision but it was a very close fight. In fact under the regular DEEP rules this fight would have been a draw, however, it was held under DEEP's "must decision" rule where judges had to pick the winner at the end. Even though it was even in the judges scorecards, number of successful takedowns made the difference and Otsuka went home with W.
Otsuka is from wrestling and Kitada is from judo.
So, we can expect same kind of a fight. One successful takedown can make a big difference. A very close fight. Because, both fighters has got o be highly motivated.
For a 34-year old veteran like Kitada who has been fighting in pro MMA for 10 years, this is a huge chance. Maybe the last chance to get the belt.
On the other end, Otsuka has to be more than just simply motivated to win, because, he was KO'd by Shintaro Ishiwatari on New Year's Eve in little over 3 minutes. This was in the DEEP's biggest show of 2014. And, Ishiwatari is the current King of Pancrase at 135 lbs. As a DEEP champion this was the fight he really needed to win but on his own turf Otsuka didn't even last one round.
The following is the comment from Otsuka in regards to upcoming fight against Kitada (released from DEEP head office):
"I still regret that I was KO'd by Ishiwatari on last year's New Year's Eve, couldn't produce a positive result as the current DEEP champion. However, I want to 'clear' this title defense against Kitada, and till the day I can fight Ishiwari again, my intention is to keep on winning."
