Curtis retains WW belt, Felix triumphant in return at CES MMA 42

Chris Curtis made a successful first defense of the Classic Entertainment and sports welterweight title but it was by no means an easy victory over Wilfredo Santiago Jr.  CES MMA 42 took place March 31st at the Twin River Casino in Lincoln, RI with a main card broadcast on AXS TV.

Wilfredo Santiago Jr. overwhelmed Chris Curtis for most of the fight with accuracy and power in his strikes.  Around one minute into the second round Curtis caught Santiago being overly aggressive as he landed a left hook that made Santiago stumble backwards while a few more shots dropped Santiago and earned the TKO.  Curtis who won the title in January 2016 but was coming off a non-title loss to Nah-Shon Burrell improved his record to 15-5, Santiago fell to 7-4.

Superior grappling was the key to victory for former CES MMA lightweight champion Luis Felix who defeated Dawond Pickney in a non-title bout.  Pickney did a good job of defending the submission attempts for the better part of the first round until Felix sunk in the rear-naked choke for the win.  Felix who was returning after fifteen months off due to a knee injury improved his record to 15-9, Pickney’s third loss in a row drops his record to 10-7.
