A welterweight showdown between Zak Cummings (21-5) and Thiago Alves (22-11) has been added to the UFC Fight Night 124 card. The event will be held Jan. 14 from Scottrade Center in St. Louis.
Cummings is currently riding back-to-back wins. He submitted Alexander Yakovlev at UFC Fight Night 99 in November of last year. And most recently he submitted Nathan Coy at UFC on Fox 24 in April.
The 33-year-old Texas native is now 6-2 inside the octagon since debuting with the promotion in 2013. Cummings is a BJJ black belt under Leonardo “Leo” Pecanha and has finished 11 of his 21 career wins via submission and five by knockout.
Alves made a successful return to the welterweight division in April with a unanimous decision over Patrick Cote at UFC 210. Prior to that he attempted to debut at lightweight but missed weight by over 7 lbs. and ultimately dropped a unanimous decision to Jim Miller. Alves is now 3-2 in his last five fights.
“Pitbull” is a former welterweight title contender and has been competing inside the UFC octagon since 2005. He has notable wins over the likes of John Howard, Josh Koscheck, Matt Hughes, Karo Parisyan and Chris Lytle among others.
