Cody Garbrandt meets TJ Dillashaw at UFC 213

Dillashaw vs Garbrandt

Cody Garbrandt (11-0) will make his first title defense as UFC bantamweight champion when he takes on former champion and former Team Alpha Male teammate TJ Dillashaw (14-3) at UFC 213. UFC President Dana White confirmed the bout over the weekend.

UFC 213 will be held on July 8 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas in conjunction with International Fight Week. An official bout order for the card has yet to be announced.

Garbrandt and Dillashaw served as opposing coaches on The Ultimate Fighter 25: Redemption which will premiere on FS1 on April 19. The season features notable former TUF competitors and UFC vets who are looking for another stint in MMA’s premier fight league and the finals will also be held during International Fight Week, the day before the coaches face-off.

Garbrandt unseated champion Dominick Cruz for the bantamweight title via unanimous decision at UFC 207 this past December. It was the cherry on top of a stellar 2016 for Garbrandt who had scored first-round knockouts of Takeya Mizugaki, Thomas Almeida and Augusto Mendes earlier in the year. The 25-year-old Ohio native also holds UFC victories over Henry Briones and Marcus Brimage and remains unbeaten in his professional career.

Dillashaw lost the bantamweight title via split decision to Dominick Cruz in January 2016. Following that, he earned unanimous decision victories over Raphael Assuncao at UFC 200 last July and John Lineker at UFC 207 in December, and now finds himself back as the number one contender. The 31-year-old Bang Muay Thai product originally won the UFC bantamweight championship with a knockout of Renan Barao back in 2014. He had consecutive knockout victories over Joe Soto and Barao in a rematch before he lost the belt to Cruz.

Other bouts that have been announced for UFC 213 so far include a heavyweight matchup between Fabricio Werdum and Alistair Overeem, a welterweight scrap between Robbie Lawler and Donald Cerrone, and a heavyweight bout between Travis Browne and Oleksiy Oliynyk.
