ONE Championship welterweight champion Ben Askren looks to stay undefeated as he defends the belt against Zebaztian Kadestam. ONE Championship “Shanghai” takes place September 2nd at the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center in Shanghai, China with an iPPV through the promotions website, webcast through FloSports.
At 16-0 Ben Askren is arguably the most accomplished welterweight to have never fought in the UFC. Askren left Bellator the champion with four title defenses in 2013 then moved on to ONE Championship.
Askren won this title by defeating Nobutatsu Suzuki, experienced a “no contest” against Luis Santos, defeated Nikolay Aleksakhin in a non-title fight, and in May defended the belt for the first time against Agilan Thani. Zebaztian Kadestam enters this bout 9-3 with his latest fight being his ONE debut where he defeated Santos by KO. Although this bout doesn’t look very competitive Kadestam’s only losses were twice by decision and once by submission making him seem about the best opponent ONE has for Askren at this time.
In the co-main event former featherweight champion Jadamba Narantungalag faces Tetsuya Yamada. 12-4 Narantungalag won the belt with a unanimous decision over Koji Oishi but lost it in his first defense against Marat Gafurov. Narantungalag went on to defeat Kotetsu Boku and Eric Kelly to earn a rematch against Gafurov but lost that bout by rear-naked choke last November. 18-5-2 Yamada fought once before in ONE when he lost a unanimous decision to Eduard Folayang in January 2016. Since then Yamada has gone 3-1 with his most recent fight being a kneebar victory over Zhenyue Huang in April.
