Two top 10 ranked middleweights, Anderson Silva (34-8) and Kelvin Gastelum (14-2), will square off at UFC 212 in June. UFC officials announced the fight this week.
UFC 212 will take place June 3 from Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Featherweight champ Jose Aldo and interim champ Max Holloway will unify the belts in the main event.
Silva got back on track with a unanimous decision win over Derek Brunson at UFC 208 in February. Prior to that the former middleweight champ had moved up to light heavyweight where he dropped a decision to champ Daniel Cormier at UFC 200 last summer. And in February of last year at UFC Fight Night 84 “The Spider” lost a decision to Michael Bisping in a “Fight of the Night” performance. Now 41-years-old, the former pound-for-pound king will be looking to prove he’s still one of the best in the world as he takes on one of the division’s most powerful rising stars.
Gastelum stopped Vitor Belfort via TKO this past weekend at UFC Fight Night 106. And before that the TUF 17 winner had taken out Tim Kennedy in December and won a unanimous decision over Johny Hendricks last July. Still unbeaten at middleweight, Gastelum also holds wins over Nate Marquardt and Uriah Hall at 185-pounds. Gastelum is currently ranked No. 10 in the division, and if he can score an impressive win over No. 7 ranked Silva, it will be back-to-back wins over two legends and should put him right in the mix as a top contender in the division.
