Mendes vs Sterling

Top-ranked bantamweight Aljamain Sterling (12-2) will face BJJ specialist Augusto Mendes (6-1) at UFC on FOX 24 next month. News of the matchup was made public on Thursday.

UFC on FOX 24 will be held April 15 from Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo. A flyweight championship will serve as main event as Demetrious Johnsons defends his 125-pound title against Wilson Reis.

Sterling was on a 12-fight undefeated streak before dropping a split decision to Bryan Caraway at UFC Fight Night 88 in May of last year. In January, Sterling returned against Rafael Assuncao at UFC on FOX 23 but once against came up short via split decision. Before his recent two-fight skid, the 27-year-old New York native had peeled off consecutive wins over Cody Gibson, Hugo Viana, Takeya Mizugaki and Johnny Eduardo. Sterling is currently ranked No. 8 at bantamweight.

Mendes dropped his octagon debut to Cody Garbrandt via TKO at UFC Fight Night 83 in February 2016. The 34-year-old Brazilian returned to action in January of this year with a split decision win over Frankie Saenz at UFC Fight Night 103. Mendes had been competing under the Legacy FC banner before signing with the UFC and went 3-0 in the promotion, with all three wins coming by way of stoppage.
