UFC welterweight champ Tyron Woodley (16-3-1) will rematch Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson (13-1-1) at UFC 209 in March. After months of trash talk and speculation, Woodley announced the news on his podcast on Monday.
UFC 209 will be held March 4 from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The championship bout is expected to headline the pay-per-view card.
Riding back-to-back wins over Dong Hyun Kim and Kelvin Gastelum, Woodley won the welterweight championship with a first-round knockout of Robbie Lawler at UFC 201 last July. He clashed with Thompson in his first title defense at UFC 205 in November, the two fought to a draw and the bout received “Fight of the Night” honors. Woodley is now 6-2-1 inside the Octagon and holds six career wins via knockout and five via submission.
Thompson was on an impressive seven-fight winning streak heading into his original matchup against Woodley. He knocked out Johny Hendricks in early 2016, then won a unanimous decision over Rory MacDonald in June. The 33-year-old Kempo Karate black belt also holds knockout wins over the likes of Jake Ellenberger, Robert Wihittaker, Chris Clements and Dan Stittgen. Thompson’s only loss to date was a decision to Matt Brown back in 2012.
With this addition, the UFC 209 card now includes:
- Welterweight Championship: Tyron Woodley Stephen Thompson
- Mark Hunt vs. Alistair Overeem
- Mirsad Bektic vs. Darren Elkins
- Todd Duffee vs. Mark Godbeer
- David Teymur vs. Lando Vannata
- Paul Craig vs. Tyson Pedro
