UFC reportedly working towards Demian Maia vs. Jorge Masvidal
Per multiple reports, the UFC is working on adding a welterweight feature fight to the upcoming UFC Fight Night 108 show. The expected bout would be between Demian Maia and Jorge Masvidal. The event takes place April 22 at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville.
Maia is currently riding a six-fight winning streak that dates back to 2014. In his last fight, he scored a first-round submission over former WEC champion Carlos Condit. During the run, he has also defeated the likes of Gunnar Nelson, Neil Magny and Matt Brown. Maia joined the UFC as a middleweight in 2007. He earned a middleweight title shot in 2010 but failed to wrestle the belt away from then-champion Anderson Silva. Since dropping down to welterweight in 2012, he has gone 9-2.
Masvidal joined the UFC as part of the Strikeforce merger in 2013. He went 5-2 at lightweight before moving up to welterweight. At his new weight, he dropped two of his first three bouts. However, since dropping a split decision against Lorenz Larkin last summer, Masvidal has picked up three-straight wins over Ross Pearson, Jake Ellenberger and Donald Cerrone. In 2011, Masvidal challenged Gilbert Melendez for the Strikeforce lightweight title but dropped a decision.
The main event of UFC Fight Night 108 was expected to be a featherweight contest between Cub Swanson and Artem Lobov. However, pundits expect this bout to serve as the main event if the UFC is able to add it to the event.
