Per multiple media sources, the UFC is working towards a return bout for former UFC champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. He is expected to face Gian Villante at UFC Fight Night 107, which takes place March 11 at the Centro de Formacao Olimpica do Nordeste in Fortaleza, Brazil.
Rua is coming off back-to-back wins over Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Corey Anderson. Prior to that, he had dropped four of his last five bouts. In 2010, “Shogun” defeated Lyoto Machida to claim the UFC light heavyweight title. In his first title defense, he dropped the title to Jon Jones. In 2005, Rua defeated Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, Nogueira, Alistair Overeem and Ricardo Arona to win that year’s Pride Middleweight Grand Prix.
Villante has been competing exclusively in the UFC since coming over in the Strikeforce merger in 2013. In the Octagon, he has gone 5-4 with wins over the likes of Sean O’Connell, Corey Anderson and Anthony Perosh. In his last fight, Villante scored a second-round knockout over Saparbek Safarov.
In the main event of UFC Fight Night 107, former UFC light heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort will take on Kelvin Gastelum in a middleweight bout.
