The UFC has finally announced a new opponent for Gunnar Nelson. The Icelandic prospect will now face DaMarques Johnson at a catchweight of 175 pounds. The contest will be part of UFC on Fuel TV 5, which takes place Sept. 29 at Capital FM Arena in Nottingham, England.
Nelson's original opponent, Pascal Krauss, dropped out of the fight with an injury. Rumors then circulated that he would face Rich Attonito, but the UFC has now confirmed Johnson for the card.
The Icelandic fighter has been considered one of the top prospects on the European scene for some time. He holds an undefeated 9-0-1 record in MMA, but his biggest accomplishments have come on the grappling mats. At the 2009 ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship, Nelson finished fourth in the absolute category. Along the way, he picked up surprise victories over Jeff Monson and David Avellan. In the same year, he also took golds at the 2009 Pan American Championship in gi and no-gi.
Johnson has been fighting in the UFC since finishing as a runner up on the ninth season of "The Ultimate Fighter." He holds victories over IFL veterans Mike Guymon and Brad Blackburn. However, he has recently dropped back-to-back bouts to John Maguire and Mike Swick.
In the main event of UFC on Fuel TV 5, heavyweights Stefan Struve and Stipe Miocic fight for positioning in the suddenly crowded UFC division.
