UFC heavyweight champ Stipe Miocic, along with Jason Knight, Chase Sherman and Rashad Coulter, each earned $50,000 in fight-night bonuses for their standout performances at UFC 211 in Dallas over the weekend. Miocic and Knight won “Performance of the Night” honors, while Sherman and Coulter took home the “Fight of the Night” award.
Miocic (17-2) successfully defended his heavyweight title in a rematch against former champ Junior dos Santos in the main event. Despite some heavy leg kicks from dos Santos early on, Miocic put the pressure on the Brazilian, dropped him with a right hand and then followed up with heavy shots to get the TKO victory at 2:22 of the first round. The win for Miocic marked redemption from their first fight in 2014 when dos Santos won a unanimous decision.
Proving to be a threat on the ground and on his feet, Knight (17-2) took out fellow featherweight prospect Chas Skelly with a TKO in the third round. Knight threatened with omoplatas, gogoplatas and kimuras on the ground, but it was a clean left hook on the feet that dropped Skelly in the third round and allowed Knight to land several unanswered blows to end the fight.
Sherman (10-3) and Coulter (8-2) put on a heavyweight slugfest of epic proportions. Sherman tuned Coulter up with technical striking and devastating leg kicks that left the Dallas fighter struggling to stay standing. Coulter proved to be nearly impossible to put away and remained dangerous to the end with heavy hands of his own. But a right elbow perfectly placed near the end of round 2 by Sherman folded Coulter into an unconscious heap for the finish.
