UFC 207 bonus report

Amanda Nunes, Cody Garbrandt, Dominick Cruz and Alex Garcia each earned $50,000 in fight-night bonuses following their performances at UFC 207 Friday night in Las Vegas. Nunes and Garcia were awarded “Performance of the Night” honors, while Garbrandt and Cruz took home “Fight of the Night”.

Nunes retained her women’s bantamweight title in the main event with a crushing 48-second TKO over former champ Ronda Rousey. Nunes’s boxing proved too much for Rousey and the Olympic judoka looked out of her element from start to finish. Nunes began landing hard punches early and Rousey was unable to get the fight to the ground to unleash her patented armbar. Rousey never went down but was out on her feet when referee Herb Dean was forced to stop the match.

In the co-main event Garbrandt upset Cruz via unanimous decision to take the men’s bantamweight title from him. Garbrandt’s powerful and fast boxing combined with his elusiveness seemed to make the difference as Cruz was unable to capitalize with his trademark footwork and odd angles. The Team Alpha Male fighter dropped Cruz multiple times to earn 48-46 scores on two judges’ scorecards, and 48-47 on the third judges’ scorecard.

In preliminary card action Garcia starched longtime Octagon veteran Mike Pyle with a one-punch knockout in the first round. After some initial back-and-forth a right hand from Garcia perfectly placed on the chin sent Pyle unconscious to the canvas causing his head to bounce off the mat. The bout was stopped at the 3:34 mark and Garcia picked up his fourth win in the UFC’s welterweight division since signing with the promotion in 2013.
