Max Holloway, Lando Vannata, Cub Swanson and Dooho Choi were each awarded $50,000 bonuses at Saturday’s UFC 206 event in Toronto, Ontario. Holloway and Vannata received “Performance of the Night” honors, while Swanson and Choi was named “Fight of the Night”.
Holloway bested former lightweight champ Anthony “Showtime” Pettis in the night’s featherweight main event with a third-round TKO finish. After breaking his hand early in the fight, Pettis relied largely on his kicking prowess. But it wasn’t enough as Holloway busted “Showtime” up with jabs and kicks of his own to wear the former champ down. A body kick from Holloway in round three hurt Pettis, and Holloway was able to capitalize with punches and finish him off. In addition to the bonus money, Holloway also earned the interim featherweight belt and number one contender spot to Jose Aldo’s title.
Vannata picked up his second straight fight-night bonus with the kind of highlight reel finish fighters dream about. The Greg Jackson-trained lightweight stopped Octagon vet John Makdessi with a spinning wheel kick 1:40 into the first round. After dropping a short notice fight against Tony Ferguson in his UFC debut in July, Vannata gets back on track with his first win on the big stage and improves his record to 9-1.
Swanson and Choi not only earned “Fight of the Night” but will certainly be remembered as one of the greatest fights of 2016. The two featherweights slugged it out non-stop for 15 minutes. Both guys got rocked at various points in the fight and looked like one more clean shot would end the fight. But it never did! Neither fighter would go down, and neither would give up. In the end, Swanson was awarded the unanimous decision, but Choi showed everyone he’s a serious threat in the division as he picked up his third straight fight-night bonus.
