A showdown between top ranked heavyweights Alistair Overeem (43-16, 1 NC) and Curtis Blaydes (9-1, 1 NC) has been booked for UFC 225. Promotion officials announced the bout this week.
UFC 225 will take place June 9 from United Center in Chicago. A main event for the card has not yet been officially determined.
Overeem had a two-fight winning streak snapped by Francis Ngannou via KO at UFC 218 in December. Prior to that “The Reem” won a decision over former champ Fabricio Werdum in July, and he knocked out Mark Hunt in March of last year. He is currently ranked No. 2 in the UFC’s heavyweight division.
Overeem got a shot at the UFC heavyweight title against Stipe Miocic in Sept. 2016 but was stopped in the first round. The 37-year-old former K-1 Grand Prix champion is now 6-2 in his last eight fights. Nineteen of his 43 career victories have been by knockout and 19 have been by submission.
Blaydes is currently ranked No. 5 in the division and has won his last four fights in a row. “Razor” most recently earned a unanimous decision victory over Mark Hunt at UFC 221 last month. And prior to that he posted wins over Oleksiy Oliynyk, Daniel Omielanczuk and Cody East.
Blaydes’ only career loss came against Francis Ngannou via TKO in his UFC debut back in April 2016. The 27-year-old Chicago native has finished seven of his nine career wins via knockout and two by decision.
