Shinya Aoki and Garry Tonon reportedly matched for grappling match in One FC

Former One lightweight champion Shinya Aoki

One Championship has reportedly added a grappling match between former lightweight champion Shinya Aoki and Garry Tonon to their upcoming event on May 26. The event entitled “Dynasty of Heroes” takes place at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore.

Aoki has been out of action since falling to Eduard Folayang and losing his One Championship lightweight title. The defeat snapped a nine-fight winning streak that dated back to 2012. He won the title over Kotetsu Boku in 2013 and successfully defended it against Kamal Shalorus and Koji Ando. During his MMA career, Aoki has scored signature victories over Kazushi Sakuraba, Tatsuya Kawajiri, former WEC champion Rob McCullough and former Bellator and UFC champion Eddie Alvarez.

The Japanese fighter has competed sparingly over the years in grappling. In 2005, he won the ADCC Japan Qualifiers, but he lost both his bouts at the ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championships to Marcelo Garcia and Roger Gracie.

Tonon continues to hint at MMA conversion but continues to compete in grappling. He has had his most success in the Eddie Bravo Invitational where he is a four-time champion and has gone 17-1. In EBI competitions, he has defeated Vinny Magalhaes, Javier Vasquez and Eddie Cummings. At the most recent ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championships he went 1-2 in the under 77 kg and absolute divisions. His lone victory came over recent Bellator signee Dillon Danis.

In the main event of “Dynasty of Heroes” Angela Lee will put her strawweight title on the line against Istela Nunes.
