Santos misses weight against WW champion Askren for One Championship

Ben Askren

Ben AskrenLess than 24 hours before One Championship “Pride of Lions” is set to take place there is no word on if the main event will be a title fight.  Luis Santos is scheduled to fight current welterweight champion Ben Askren however the challenger missed weight coming it at 172 pounds to Askren’s 169.5.  The co-main event is still on as strawweight champion Sor Amnuaysirichoke and challenger Yago Bryan Farias de Morais both made weight.  One Championship “Pride of Lions” takes place November 13th at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore with a webcast pay-per-view through the promotion’s website.

Assuming the title fight takes place it is a rematch of their ill-fated encounter in April which was ruled a “no contest”.  Olympic wrestling vet, former Bellator welterweight champion, and current One Championship title holder Askren stands undefeated at 14-0.  Askren left Bellator after his fourth title defense, defeated Bakhityar Abbasov to win the vacant One belt in August Luis Santos2014, then had the no-contest against Santos.  In that first match against Santos it was an inadvertent eye poke mid-way through the first round that rendered Santos unable to continue.  61-9 Santos is much more experienced in MMA but lacks Askren’s wrestling accolades.  Santos went 2-2 in Bellator then picked up seven wins in a row prior to the Askren bout, a TKO of Abbasov being his One Championship debut.  At this point the fight is on but no word is available on if it will be for the title, presumably not considering the history of most MMA promotions.

Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke enters this first title defense undefeated in MMA with a pro record of 5-0.  Amnuaysirichoke won the belt with a unanimous technical decision over Roy Doliguez in May, Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke’s first fight to make it out of the second round.  Yago Bryan Farias de Morais is also undefeated at 3-0 with this being his One debut, his last fight being a split decision over Francisco Carlos Pezzi Malicheski in Shooto Brazil last December.
