Joby Sanchez and Benito Lopez are the latest fighters to earn UFC contracts from Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series with Lopez defeating former LFC champion Steven Peterson while Sanchez took out J.P. Buys. DWTNCS 7 took place August 22nd at the UFC Training Center in Las Vegas, NV with a webcast at UFC Fight Pass.
It was half-way through the card that UFC vet Joby Sanchez made his return to DWTNCS having defeated Manny Vazquez on the first episode. J.P. Buys scored an early suplex in the first round and worked from a standing body triangle later in the round but was unable to put away the more experienced fighter. Round 2 started out more of the same with Buys looking for submissions but Sanchez moved to side control for an arm-triangle choke then gained mount for strikes to the head leading to the TKO. Sanchez now stands 11-2 with his only two losses being in the Octagon and this being his fourth win in a row. Buys exited the cage 4-2 with his three-fight win streak broken.
Benito Lopez took the split decision over Steven Peterson by winning rounds 1 and 3. Peterson who normally relies on his standup resorted to ground-and-pound in the second round while Lopez’ punishing jab scored enough in the first and third rounds to win over two of the three judges. Lopez remained undefeated with a record of 8-0, Peterson dropped to 15-6.
DWTNCS has one more episode this season which takes place on August 29th. Headlining the card are two undefeated fighters, 7-0 Jose Flores and 5-0 Matt Frevola.
