On Tuesday, Video Research Inc., revealed the TV ratings of the programs aired by five terrestrial stations on New Year’s Eve.
As usual “Red and White Singing Contest” by NHK scored the highest rating. The program by NHK scored an average rating of 35.8 % for the first part (19:15- 20:55) and 39.4 % for the second part. (21:00 – 23*45)
The second highest was “Downtown’s Gaki No Tsukaiya Arahen!!” By Nippon Television. The popular show by the comedian duo scored 17.3% for the first part (18:30 – 21:00) and 16.3% for the second part. (21:00 – 24:30) The third highest was “50th Annual Year End Japan’s Songs” by TV Tokyo and the rating was 8.4%. (16:00 – 22:00)
RIZIN was fourth with 4.85% between 18:30 to 21:30, 6.4% from 21:30 to 22:50, and 4.3% from 22:50 to 23:45.
Most fights were tape-delayed except four. Shnju Nozawa Auclair’s second pro fights, Mirko Cro-Cop vs Tsuyoshi TK Kosaka, Tenshin Nasukawa vs Yamaoto Fujita and RENA vs Kanna Asakura were aired live between 18:30 to 21:30.
In 2016, RIZIN scored 7.1%, 5.7% and 3.6% on New Year’s Eve so the promotion did maintain similar numbers but it wasn’t necessary so high.
Compared to the last RIZIN event took place on October 15th, the rating went down dramatically. For this event, Fuji Television only aired two fights, RENA and Nasukawa, and scored 10.3%.
For RIZIN, the TV rating is everything.
The rating determines what kind of broadcasting fee RIZIN can receive from Fuji Television in 2018. Besides the the gate revenue this broadcasting fee is the biggest income for RIZIN for this year. This means, most fighters purses were negotiated and determined based on the TV rating and the fee Fuji Television would pay to RIZIN.
This maybe is the reason why RIZIN is not promoting an event till May this year, and cutting down the New Year’s Eve show to only one day.
Needless to say, this could mean that the fighters can not expect to get a big raise in 2018.
