AXS TV and LFA wrapped up their 2017 season with Ricky Simon claiming the vacant bantamweight title against Chico Camus. LFA 29 took place December 15th at the Mystic Casino in Prior Lake, MN with a main card broadcast on AXS TV.
Ricky Simon used his wrestling to control and punish Chico Camus en route to a one-sided unanimous decision. Simon opened a cut on Camus’ head early in the fight while the rest of the five-round battle was largely Simon scoring with takedowns and elbows. Camus remained a threat and never gave up but was unable to launch an effective offense for longer than a minute as Simon’s relentless ground-and-pound kept him on defense. After five rounds Simon was declared the winner as his record climbed to 11-1 with four wins in a row, Camus fell to 17-8 with his three-win streak broken.
The judges’ decision in the co-main event was a surprise as Jeff Peterson was awarded the unanimous decision over Bellator vet Mike Richman. Richman appeared to win the first two rounds with his boxing skills as he chopped away at the body of Peterson while Peterson only landed the occasional leg kick. Round 3 saw Peterson change gears and work from top position on the ground but it appeared to be too little too late. The judges saw it differently though as Peterson was given the nod. Peterson extended his win streak to five in a row with an overall record of 9-6, Richman’s third loss in a row left his record 18-8.
LFA are now off until January when the top independent holds three events. Up first is LFA 30 on January 12th headlined by Curtis Millender vs. Nick Barnes.
