Rizin Fighting Federation has announced the first bout for their upcoming super atomweight tournament. Shoot Boxing champion Rena Kubota will take on King of the Cage champion Andy Nguyen in the first round on Oct. 15 at the Marine Messe Fukuoka Arena in Fukuoka, Japan.
Kubota started her career in Shoot Boxing. The hybrid sport is basically kickboxing with takedowns and standing submissions. She currently holds the Shoot Boxing flyweight title and is a four-time Girl’s S-Cup champion. Kubota made her MMA debut for Rizin in 2015 with a first-round submission over Jleana Valentino and has built a 4-0 record in the sport. In her last MMA fight, he scored a first-round knockout over Dora Perjes last April.
Nguyen made her Rizin debut on this past New Year’s Eve and scored a first-round submission victory over world champion wrestler Miyuu Yamamoto. The KOTC champion has since returned to the U.S. and defeated Bi Nguyen last May. She holds a 5-3 record as a professional and won the KOTC title over Cassie Robb last October.
Headlining the Oct. 15 Rizin card will be the second round of the promotion’s bantamweight tournament. Also on the card, Kazushi Sakuraba and Dan Henderson will face off in a grappling match.
