PANCRASE 289 – 08/20/2017: Media Work Out of Team Pancrase

Four Pancrase fighters in the “Pancrase vs DEEP – 5 vs 5” part of Pancraes 289, Kenta Takizawa, Yuki Yasunaga, Kyosuke Yokoyama, and Yusuke Ogiukubo held a media work out on Thursday in Tokyo.

In a very convincing manner, Pancrase president Masakazu Sakai said, “This is a good opportunity to prove that Pancrase is the Japan’s strongest MMA promotion.”

Sakai continued explaining, “I actually didn’t wanted to do this promotion vs promotion fights but I’ve decided to do this just because Abema TV is paying bonuses to the fighters. I don’t want fighters to be under the pressure by putting the promotion on their back, but also, I think this is going to be a good experience, and at the end, if we can prove that Pancrase is the promotion that has the strongest fighters in Japan, then that would be good.”

In regards to five fighters DEEP has selected, “They are all good fighters. All of their fight styles would match. Very impressed with (Shigeru) Saeki’s (DEEP president) selection.”

And, Sakai shared his prediction, “Without a doubt I think we are going to win all. Needless to say. I don’t want to hear ‘team competition’ from DEEP after this.”

Four fighters from Pancrase each sparred for one-round each then answered questions from the reporters.

The following are the comments from each fighters:

Kenta Takizawa
“I am going to represent Pancrase in this fight so I want to finish this with KO. I’ve trained with (Toshiaki) Kitada before. He is a strong grappler so I’ve been training on getting up from the bottom. I also have to be cautious about his guillotine choke even in the standing position. I think this fight will be determined in the first round. Either KO by me or he would choke me out. I know many people out there are thinking that I would lose by guillotine but I am telling you, I’ve been training super hard. Watch, I am going to beat Kitada.”

Yuki Yasunaga
“Just like about two years ago when I fought in the team competition against DEEP, I am going to have to approach this fight like any other fights. I think the best way to win is to fight in my own rhythm. (Yuta “Monkey”) Shibata is very strong on the ground. He is very flexible, very fast, well-balanced, he is going to be very tough if he gets on the top. I never fought him before so this is very stimulating for me too because in Pancrase, I tend to fight many guys I’ve fought before.”

Kyosuke Yokoyama
“Its a team competition but for me its like any other fights. Sorry to say this. Until I got this fight, I didn’t know who (Juri) Ohara is. So I watched his fights and now I know that he has a lot of experience, he has a long reach and he is very tall too. He is considered as ‘striker’ but I thought he is a good grappler as well. He knows how to reverse the position after being taken down.”

Yusuke Ogikubo
“My opponent is aggressive so our fight styles should match well. Our fight is going to be the first fight in this team competition so I want to set the tone by going hard. I am honored to represent Pancrase.”
