Olympic wrestler Maikel Perez Gonzalez signs with LFA
Legacy Fighting Alliance has announced the signing of Cuban Olympic wrestler Maikel Perez Gonzalez. The announcement did not include details on his promotional debut.
Gonzalez made his professional MMA debut last year at Resurrection Fighting Alliance 38. On that card, he scored a first-round submission over Martin Diaz.
Before converting to MMA, Gonzalez represented his native Cuba in a variety of international wrestling events including the 2006 and 2009 Pan American Championships, the 2009 World Championships and the 2008 Olympic games. His best performance came in 2009 when he won the gold medal at the Pan American Championships at 60 kg.
At the 2008 Olympics, Gonzalez competed in the same bracket at UFC fighter Henry Cejudo who went on to win the gold medal. Gonzalez lost his first round match to Bulgaria’s Rizvan Gadzhiev, which eliminated him from the field.
Gonzalez returned for the World Championships in 2009 and competed in the same bracket as Bellator veteran Shawn Bunch. Gonzalez defeated France’s Didier Pais and Bulgaria’s Anatoli Guidea before being eliminated by Uzbekistan’s two-time world champion Dilshod Mansurov.
