UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier (19-1) will defend his title against Volkan Oezdemir (15-1) at UFC 220. The bout was officially announced Wednesday evening on UFC Tonight.
UFC 220 will take place Jan. 20 from TD Garden in Boston. Cormier and Oezdemir will square-off in the main event.
The bout will mark Cormier’s first title defense since he was reinstated as champion. The former Olympian originally lost the title to Jon Jones at UFC 214 in July, but a failed drug test from Jones resulted in him being stripped of the belt and it being returned to its rightful owner.
Cormier first won the vacant UFC light heavyweight strap by submitting Anthony Johnson at UFC 187 in May 2015. Following that, he racked up wins over Alexander Gustafsson and Anderson Silva (non-title bout) before submitting Johnson once again in a rematch at UFC 210 in April of this year.
Oezdemir is currently ranked No. 2 in the UFC’s 205-pound division and is riding a five-fight winning streak. The 28-year-old Swede has peeled off three straight wins inside the octagon, most recently knocking out Jimi Manuwa in just 42-seconds at UFC 214 in July.
Prior to that Oezdemir knocked out Misha Cirkunov in just 28-seconds in May, and in his UFC debut in February, he earned a split decision nod over Ovince Saint Preux. Eleven of Oezdemir’s 15 career wins have been by knockout.
