Nguyen wins rematch against Gafurov, takes FW title at One Championship

Martin Nguyen dethroned featherweight champion Marat Gafurov by KO handing the Russian his first professional loss and avenging a loss from their 2015 battle.  One Championship “Quest for Greatness” took place August 18th at the Stadium Negara in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with an iPPV through the promotion’s website.

The fight started out a duplicate of their first meeting with Gafurov shooting for takedowns and looking for a rear-naked choke.  Martin Nguyen managed to survive the first round onslaught to land an overhand right early in the second that sent Gafurov face-first to the mat for the KO win.  Nugyen’s victory improved his record to 9-1 with his only loss being to Gafurov, Gafurov’s loss left his record 15-1.

In the co-main event lightweight bout Ev Ting defeated former welterweight champion Nobutatsu Suzuki.  On the feet Ting’s flashy unusual techniques kept Suzuki guessing while a takedown quickly led to the TKO at 3:29.  Ting now stands 14-4 with his only loss in six fights or two years being to Eduard Folayang in April, Suzuki’s first fight in almost three years left is record 11-3.

One Championship have ten more events scheduled for this year with the next one being in Shanghai on September 2nd.  Headlining that event is welterweight champion Ben Askren taking on Zebaztian Kadestam.
