One title was defended and one was taken at Legacy Fighting Alliance as Andrea Lee defeated late-replacemenet Jamie Thorton while James Nakashima won a decision over Derrick Krantz. LFA 23 took place September 22nd at the Horseshoe Casino in Bossier City, LA with a main card broadcast on AXS TV.
As good as James Nakashima is it has to be said his victory over defending welterweight champion Derrick Krantz was marred by accidental fouls. In round 1 Nakashima’s spread fingers poked Krantz in the eye causing a rather longer than seemed usual time out and seemed like it would stop the fight. Round 3’s groin kick didn’t help endure Nakashima to fans either.
The fight started out with Krantz and Nakashima throwing heavy leather with Krantz scoring a knockdown early. After the eye poke Krantz’ eye trickled blood for the rest of the fight while the action slowed somewhat as Krantz seemed to let is emotions get the better of his judgment. In the fourth round Nakashima switched to his wrestling taking Krantz down and landing many of his punches but unable to finish the fight while Krantz threatened a kimura in round 5. In the end the scorecards were a little scattered with tallies of 49-46, 47-48, and 50-45 in favor of Nakashima. Nakashima took home the belt and remained undefeated at 8-0 although jokes are already circulating his nickname should be “the decision” as all eight have come from judges scorecards. Krantz’ reign and three-fight win streak came to en end as his record now rests at 20-10.
LFA took a lot of flack for matching defending women’s flyweight champion Andrea Lee against Jamie Thorton for a first title defense but it should be pointed out at least a dozen women were offered the shot and turned it down. Not surprisingly the fight wasn’t very close as Lee chopped at the legs of the challenger early before opening a more diversified attack as the fight escalated. After scoring knockdowns in each of the first two rounds Lee found herself in a guillotine choke against the cage making it seem Thorton might pull out a surprise win. Lee took the fight to the ground, freed her neck, then isolated the arm Thorton used for the choke and hit a kimura for the win. Lee’s victory improved her record to 8-2 with four wins in a row, Thorton who deserves credit for stepping up exited the cage 4-4.
AXS TV’s top promotion holds two events in October, on the 12th and 20th. The 13th is headlined by Matthew Frincu vs. Curtis Millender but is at this time better known for the return of Mackenzie Dern as she takes on Mandy Polk.
