From Maximum Fighting Championship:
Two title fights plus packed night of matchups set for MFC 40: Crowned Kings
MFC 40: Crowned Kings will be held on Friday, May 9 at the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta. The main card for MFC 40 will air live on AXS TV Fights beginning at 10 p.m. ET/8 p.m. MT/7 p.m. PT (check local listings for channel designation). The preliminary bouts for MFC 40 will be broadcast live on the Maximum Fighting Championship's Facebook page beginning at 8:30 p.m. ET/6:30 p.m. MT/5:30 p.m. PT.
MFC 40 is topped by a pair of title fights including a hotly anticipated rematch for the lightweight belt.
One of the co-main events will feature fan favorite "Smilen" Sam Alvey make the first defense of his MFC middleweight title as he takes on challenger Wes "Nile" Swofford. And in the other half of the main event, Tom "Da Tank" Gallicchio looks to make it two in a row over Kurt "The Hurt" Southern and this time take home the MFC lightweight championship.
MFC Middleweight Title – Alvey vs. Swofford
Alvey (21-5) is coming off an electrifying fifth-round TKO victory over Jason South at MFC 38 that earned him the title, and the Temecula, California, product has won four of his last five outings. Alvey (Twitter: @smilensam) has won two of three bouts under the MFC banner including a third-round knockout of Jay Silva at MFC 37.
Swofford (9-4) has captured victory in six of his last eight outings including a scintillating first-round knockout of Silva at MFC 36 in which he came from behind after an early knockdown to snatch away victory in just 41 seconds.
Both Swofford (Twitter: @WesSwofford), who hails from Redding, California, and Alvey will be involved in one of the most unique situations ever seen in mixed martial arts. Both fighters will be cornered by their wives – a first in MMA to have both fighters in a title fight backed by their spouse. Swofford will have his wife Salena in his corner, while Alvey will have his wife, former America's Next Top Model winner McKey Sullivan, in his corner.
MFC Lightweight Title – Gallicchio vs. Southern
In the lightweight title fight, it's a chance at redemption for both Gallicchio (18-8) and Southern (13-5) who originally collided at MFC 39. Gallicchio (Twitter: @TomGallicchio) earned a second-round submission win over Southern back in January, but he was ruled ineligible to take the title belt home after missing weight a day earlier at the official weigh-in. Gallicchio is originally from New Jersey, but now trains alongside Sam Alvey in Temecula, California.
Southern (Twitter: @KurtSouthern) was disappointed in the result but is 2-0 in career rematches so the Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, product is eager for battle once again. Southern holds a notable rematch victory over Jonatas Novaes as well as two wins over Mukai Maromo.
Main Card Matchups
The MFC 40 main card offers a bevy of stars including one former MFC champion and rising talents in the lightweight and bantamweight divisions.
In a light-heavyweight tilt, former MFC champ Victor "The Matrix" Valimaki returns to the organization that launched his stellar career as he meets knockout specialist Bill Widler. Valimaki (17-8) has a plethora of skills and the Edmonton, Alberta, product has re-dedicated himself to getting back into the upper echelon of the sport. But Valimaki (Twitter: @V2MMA) will have his hands full as he squares off against Wilder (8-5), who boasts six knockouts on his career log and has won three of his last four fights.
A bantamweight matchup pitting "The Hard-Hitting Hillbilly" Kevin Croom against Jesse Brock will determine the next challenger for Anthony Birchak, the MFC's reigning 135-pound division champ who is currently sidelined due to injury. Birchak was originally slated to meet Croom but his injury thrust Brock into the spotlight.
Croom (14-4) is riding a tremendous wave of success having won nine straight fights including an astonishing seven fights in 2013. The Columbia, Missouri, native (Twitter: @hhhillbillyKC) has finished 11 of his opponents inside the distance with eight of those victories coming by submission. But Brock (16-8) is far from a pushover as he has won three of his last five and boasts 10 stoppages on his resume including seven via submission. The Boise, Idaho, native (Twitter: @JesseBrockMMA) has fought a cavalcade of top opponents such as Caol Uno, Demetrious Johnson, and Donald Cerrone.
Two other action-packed fights round out the main card. In one clash, blossoming lightweight talents collide as Marcus "Bad Intentions" Edwards (6-2) meets Aaron "Gorilla" Gallant (6-5), who set the MFC record for fastest knockout in his last outing, crushing his foe with a stellar three-punch combo in a mere seven seconds. But the Calgary, Alberta, product (Twitter: @gallantgorilla) will be up against a tough opponent in Edwards, who hails from Littleton, Colorado. Edwards (Twitter: @BadIntentions91) had a highly successful organizational debut at MFC 39 as he dominated Sean Powers on his way to scoring a first-round submission win.
The AXS TV Fights cards will open up with international star Shane "Shaolin" Campbell (8-2) making his MFC debut as he meets Atlanta, Georgia's Jerrid Burke (6-3) in a catchweight bout.
The MFC 40: Crowned Kings prelims airing live on the Maximum Fighting Championship's Facebook page will showcase three fights including a bantamweight affair putting Honolulu, Hawaii's Jon "Untameable" Barnard up against hometown fighter Corey "The Hatchet" Gower. Also on the prelims will be a lightweight bout of Levon Kinley against Cody Moorman, and another bantamweight bout with Mike Hay against Justin Lavertu.
