Maia set to defend flyweight title against Niedzwiedz, Dern and Medeiros square off in co-main at Invicta FC 26

Jennifer Maia

The second defense of the Invicta FC flyweight title for Jennifer Maia comes against Agrieszka Niedzwiedz in the all-women’s promotion’s return to Las Vegas.  Invicta FC 26 takes place December 8th at the Park Theatre in Las Vegas, NV with a webcast at UFC Fight Pass.

14-4-1 Jennifer Maia won the title with a unanimous decision over Vanessa Porto in March 2016 and defended it against Roxanne Modafferi by split decision that September.  Those two wins extended Maia’s win streak to five in a row stretching back almost three years, the downside being she hasn’t fought in fifteen months.  In the time Maia has been off Agrieszka Niedzwiedz extended her perfect record to 10-0 with a TKO of Samara Santos and a unanimous decision over Porto while her other win in Invicta FC was over Christine Stanley in July 2016.  Maia brings a mix of Muay Thai and BJJ to the table while Niedzwiedz is a black belt in judo and a dangerous striker.

Mackenzie Dern with submission

The co-main event looks like it could be a grappling war as former ADCC Worlds champion Mackenzie Dern faces Kaline Medeiros.  Dern is still learning striking but holds a perfect record of 4-0 in LFA and LFC events.  Dern’s first three fights were rather one-sided as Dern managed to use her grappling to dominate but in her most recent bout Mandy Polk managed to keep the fight standing long enough to show Dern’s holes in her striking.  Medeiros is more experienced in MMA but holds a mixed record at 8-5.  Medeiros was dominant in most of her fights such as against Sarah Payant at Bellator 140, Kathina Lowe at LFC 45, and against Aline Serio and Manjit Kolekar in Medeiros’ first two Invicta fights.  Against Angela Hill however Medeiros was kept at bay on the feet and when she did get the fight to the ground was unable to do enough scoring resulting in a unanimous decision loss.  The “x factor” in this fight is the weight class of 115 pounds, a weight Dern failed to make in two of her fights while her bout against Polk was at 125 pounds.
