A middleweight matchup between former light heavyweight champ Lyoto Machida (22-7) and Derek Brunson (17-5) has been booked for UFC Fight Night 119. News of the fight was released on Thursday.
UFC Fight Night 119 will be held on Oct. 28 from Ginasio do Ibirapuera in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Machida vs. Brunson is expected to headline the card though an official bout order has not yet been confirmed.
Machida is coming off an 18-month suspension after testing positive for banned substances in early 2016. It’s been over two years since he last fought and was stopped via KO by Yoel Romero at UFC Fight Night 70. And prior to that “The Dragon” was submitted by Luke Rockhold in April 2015.
The 39-year-old Machida has only won one of his past four fights and is 3-3 since dropping down to middleweight in 2013. The former 205-pound champ’s last win was a first-round TKO over CB Dollaway at UFC Fight Night 58 in Dec. 2014.
Following initial wins over Mark Munoz and Gegard Mousasi at 185-pounds, Machida fought Chris Weidman for the middleweight belt in July 2014 but lost the decision.
Brunson is currently ranked No. 7 in the division and snapped a two-fight skid in June with a first-round KO of Dan Kelly at UFC Fight Night 110. Brunson had been on a five-fight winning streak before a TKO loss to Robert Whittaker last November and dropping a decision to Anderson Silva in February.
The 33-year-old North Carolina native has scored other notable knockout victories over Uriah Hall, Roan Carneiro, Sam Alvey and Ed Herman. With 17 career wins on Brunson’s record, he has finished nine by knockout and four by submission.
