Marlon Vera (10-3-1) will have a chance to break into the bantamweight rankings when he meets No. 5 ranked John Lineker (29-8) at UFC Fight Night 119 next month. Vera confirmed the bout via social media on Tuesday.
UFC Fight Night 119 will be held Oct. 28 from Ginasio do Ibirapuera in Sao Paulo, Brazil. A middleweight showdown between Lyoto Machida and Derek Brunson is expected to headline the card.
Vera is currently riding a three-fight winning streak, most recently scoring a first-round submission over Brian Kelleher at UFC on FOX 25 in July. Prior to that he earned “Performance of the Night” honors for a TKO over Brad Pickett in March and won a decision over Ning Guangyou last November at featherweight.
The 24-year-old Brazilian is a former cast member of The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America and presently holds a UFC record of 4-2. A black belt in BJJ, six of Vera’s 10 career wins have been by submission and two by knockout.
Lineker was on an impressive six-fight winning streak before dropping a decision to TJ Dillashaw at UFC 207 last December. Before that “Hands of Stone” had racked up a series of quality wins over Alp Ozkilic, Ian McCall, Francisco Rivera, Rob Font, Michael McDonald and John Dodson.
Lineker has missed weight on several occasions but is 3-1 since officially returning to bantamweight in Sept. 2015. The 27-year-old Brazilian has finished 13 of his 29 career wins via knockout and four by submission.
