Bellator has announced that former light heavyweight champion Liam McGeary will return to action against Chris Fields. The bout will headline Bellator 173, which takes place Feb. 24 from the SSE Arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
McGeary has been out of action since dropping the promotion’s light heavyweight title to Phil Davis last November. The British fighter first won the belt in 2014 with a decision over Emmanuel Newton. He defended the belt once over former UFC champion Tito Ortiz before running into Davis. McGeary joined Bellator in 2013 and holds an 8-1 record in the promotion.
Fields was a cast member of the 19th season of “The Ultimate Fighter.” In the reality show competition, he defeated Josh Stansbury and then fell against Matt Van Buren. Since the show, Fields has fought twice for the British Association of Mixed Martial Arts with a loss coming against Christopher Jacquelin and a win over Dan Konecke. He holds a 11-7-1 record as a professional.
This bout is expected to be the main event of Bellator 173. Also on the card, prospect James Gallagher will return to the Bellator cage. The 20-year-old fighter has won both of his Bellator bouts to date.
