Liam McGeary gets new opponent for Bellator 173 main event

Former Bellator champion Liam McGeary

An injury has forced Bellator to shuffle the main event of their upcoming Bellator 173 event. Liam McGeary’s original opponent Chris Fields has been forced off the card with an injury. The former champion will now face Vladimir Filipovic on the card, which takes place Feb. 24 at the SSE Arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

McGeary is returning to action after suffering his first professional defeat and losing the Bellator light heavyweight title against Phil Davis. Prior to that loss, McGeary had started his career with 11-straight victories. He won the title over Emanuel Newton at Bellator 134 and successfully defended it against Tito Ortiz before falling to Davis.

Filipovic holds an 8-2 record as a professional. The majority of his career has come in his home promotion Serbian Battle Championship. Last June, he stepped away from that promotion and took a fight under the Fight Nights Global banner. At FNG 50, he faced Bellator fighter Anatoly Tokov and dropped a decision. In his last fight, he scored a first-round knockout over Arpad Torok.

This bout will serve as the main event of Bellator 173. Also on the card, Irish prospect James Gallagher returns to action against Kirill Medvedovski.
