Former UFC welterweight champ Robbie Lawler (27-11) will face Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone (32-7) at UFC 213. UFC officials announced the bout this week following an initial report by ESPN.
UFC 213 will be held July 8 from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. A heavyweight matchup between Fabricio Werdum and Alistair Overeem has also been announced for the card.
Lawler and Cerrone were originally slated to face off at UFC 205 last November but Lawler pulled out to take more time off after losing the championship to Tyron Woodley in July of last year. Lawler won the 170-pound title with a split decision win over Johny Hendricks at UFC 181 in December 2014. The 35-year-old veteran then successfully defended the belt against Rory MacDonald at UFC 189 and Carlos Condit at UFC 195 before getting stopped by Woodley in the first round at UFC 201.
Cerrone had been looking phenomenal since moving to the welterweight division in February 2016. “Cowboy” scored consecutive stoppage victories over Alex Oliveira, Patrick Cote, Rick Story and Matt Brown, all in 2016, before a TKO loss to Jorge Masvidal in January of this year. It should be noted Cerrone has never lost back-to-back fights in his career.
