On last week Friday, Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS) officially announced, as the "main feature" of KYOKUGEN, they will televise a kick boxing bout between UFC fighter Norifumi KID Yamamoto and former K-1 MAX champion Masato on New Year's Eve.
According to the official release, KYOKUGEN is a five-and-half-hour special TV programming and this show is about "real battles between super first-rate athletes". No other details are noted so we can assume TBS is planning on gathering bunch of top athletes from different sports to Tokyo for New Year's Eve. Not sure if they are going to rent the venue to make this a live event for the fans or will be held at the studio behind the closed door. We can expect TBS to reveal details on a later date.
KID Yamamoto and Masato fought back in 2004 and this fight scored 31.6% TV rating in Japan which was higher than the rating of the annual Red and White Singing Contest by NHK, therefore, even if this is 11 years later, obviously, TBS is hoping to score a high rating from this fight.
One of the competitors of TBS, Fuji TV is planning on broadcasting RIZIN live on the same day so MMA fans in Japan are finally back to those days where they have multiple choices of fight shows to watch on New Year's Eve.
