ABU DHABI GRAND SLAM® RIO DE JANEIRO OFFICIAL WEIGH-INS FOR WHITE AND PURPLE BELTS CONDUCTED AT CARIOCA ARENA

Rio De Janeiro, 10 November, 2017, The UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation®, the official authority for the sport of Jiu-Jitsu in the United Arab Emirates, conducted the official Weigh-ins yesterday at the Carioca Arena, ahead of the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam® | Rio De Janeiro.

The White and Purple belt jiu-jitsu club players from the UAE: Al-Ain, Al Wahda, Al Jazira and Baniyas made weight ahead of their fights tomorrow.

Ahmed Omar, White belt, Master 1, 110kg, of Al Wahda Club said “So far we have participated in all the grand slams, after Rio, there are two more to go in Abu Dhabi and London. This one will be a bit different because we are in the ‘school of jiu-jitsu’ in Brazil.

“Every grand slam is different, the technical aspect of the players differ, we didn’t have much luck in Tokyo, but we did well in Los Angeles. And god willing, we will win the gold again. Once we finish the final leg of the grand slam in London, we will focus on the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship in April next year”

At the Los Angeles leg of the tour in September 2017, there were 25 para jiu-jitsu athletes who competed in the Para-Athletes category; the number has almost tripled at the Rio leg of the tour.

Elcirley Silva, who is leading the Para-Athletes movement said “First of all I would like to thank His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed and H.E Abdulmunam Al Hashemi for believing and supporting the Para-Athletes to compete at such a grand stage. We have 68 players competing in Rio and we are targeting to have over 100 para-athletes to come to Abu Dhabi for the World Pro next year”
