FIAS, the International Sambo Federation, has written an open letter to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), saying that the sport of sambo “deserves to become part of the recognised Olympic family.”
In December, the IOC considered several sports for provisional recognition, but sambo missed out in favor of muay Thai and cheerleading.
This open letter, signed by FIAS president Vasily Shestakov and eight other top international sambo officials, cites the accomplishments and growth of FIAS and sambo. It says that “over 4.5 million people from 120 countries of all continents” train in sambo. Their most recent world championships, held in November 2016 in Sofia, Bulgaria, had over 500 athletes from 80 countries competing.
